A video showing the moment a U-Haul truck crashed into security barriers in Lafayette Square, near the White House, has begun to circulate online.

The incident occurred just before 10:00 P.M. on Monday night according to Secret Service Chief of Communications, Anthony Guglielmi.

The video has so far been viewed more than 85,000 times after being posted by the Insider Paper Twitter page.

The short clip shows shows the U-Haul truck strike the barriers after being in a stationary position.

Guglielmi spoke to Newsweek briefly about the crash and clarified whose jurisdiction the incident would fall under.

He said: "The charges against the individual are actually going to be filed by the United States Park Police as Lafayette Square is under their jurisdiction and the suspect is in their custody.

"Special Agents from the Secret Service and the FBI are providing investigative support."

A statement from Guglielmi, which he posted on Twitter, said: "Secret Service Uniformed Division officers detained the driver of a box truck after the vehicle collided with security barriers on the north side of Lafayette Square at 16th Street."

"There were no injuries to any Secret Service or White House personnel and the cause and manner of the crash remain under investigation," Guglielmi continuedt.

"Road closures are in effect and pedestrian walkways are closed as we investigate."

In a follow-up tweet, Guglielmi added: "The truck has been deemed safe by [the] DC Police Department and preliminary investigation reveals the driver may have intentionally struck the security barriers at Lafayette Square."

Other videos showing different angles of the situation have also begun to circulate on social media following the incident.

Nathan Howard, a freelance photojournalist, shared one of these videos on his Twitter page that showed the U-Haul truck being searched.

One of the items pulled from the truck appears to be a Nazi flag that is eventually folded and taken away by one of the men searching the vehicle.

Authorities have not yet released a name, motive or any other details about the person detained.

Newsweek has contacted the White House and the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia via email for comment.

Earlier in May, Guglielmi took Twitter to explain an investigation was underway for a similar incident near the White House.

On May 16, he noted that traffic around the White House complex may be impacted due to a collision and the subsequent investigation.

In his statement, he said: "Secret Service Uniformed Divison officers are investigating a vehicle collision at the security entrance at 15th Street and E Street on the White House complex.

"The collision occurred around 4:30 A.M. and there are no reports of injuries to Secret Service or White House personnel.

"We are investigating the cause and manner of this crash as well as if alcohol might be a factor. Individuals may notice an increased presence of police officers and response personnel around the White House as we gather facts."

He followed this statement with a tweet that said a man had been taken into custody after striking the security bollard.

He underwent a medical evaluation and subsequently faced charges for DUI and unlawful entry. He also clarified the individual's actions were not targeted towards the White House.
