The primary international airport serving the nation's capital will receive additional funds for its new terminal project. Virginia's two US Senators, Mark R. Warner, and Tim Kaine announced today that $35,000,000 in federal funding had been awarded for the expansion of Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
The newly announced funds will go towards building the new Concourse E. The 400,000-square-foot terminal building will feature 14 gates to host widebody and international flights. The new terminal will include a direct connection to the AeroTrain, which transports passengers to the existing terminals.

As part of the airport's more extensive modernization and improvement plan, the new facility will provide the following amenities when it opens in 2026:
The event saw 80 teams of 25 people pull a United Airlines Boeing 737 and a FedEx 757 cargo aircraft twelve feet in as little as 6 seconds.
The airport has been expanding rapidly over the past several years, resulting in several times per day when the airport's existing gates are fully utilized. In a joint statement, the Senators from Virginia highlighted how the State's busiest airport will benefit from the influx of funding:
“Dulles Airport is a beacon for both domestic and international flights, and has expanded rapidly over the past decade.
“This funding will improve travel for passengers and ensure that the airport stays functional and safe while continuing to meet flight demands.”
The new facility is being built parallel to existing structures so that it will not interfere with existing aircraft movements. It can subsequently be expanded through future projects with minimal impact on airport operations.
Some offer walk-in access, while others are a bit more exclusive. We break down IAD’s 13 lounges in this comprehensive guide.
Two additional Virginia airports will receive money for modernization projects. This week, a total of $56,966,366 in federal funds was announced for airport improvements across Virginia. The funding was awarded through the Airport Terminals Program and will be used to improve passenger services at airports serving the State Capital and beach towns.

On the coast, Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is receiving $14,716,366 to support the realignment of the airport's exclusive use access roadway to improve traffic flow into and out of the main terminal area.
The airport set a new record for intercepting firearms.
When announcing the news, the Senators noted how vital the smaller airports are to growing the local economy:
“Virginia’s airports help Virginians and visitors get where they need to go and serve as critical economic development hubs.
"We’re glad this funding, which was made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will make important upgrades to help airports across Virginia operate smoothly. We will keep working to bolster Virginia’s infrastructure and grow our economy.”
Elsewhere, $2,250,000 is going to Richmond International Airport Richmond International Airport (RIC) to design a proposed consolidated Passenger Screening Checkpoint to improve passenger flow and reduce congestion. The airport broke its annual passenger traffic records last year with over 4.7 million passengers.

The new money will help RIC alleviate capacity requirements by reducing the current imbalance across checkpoints and connecting both of the airport's concourses by supporting the design and construction of a consolidated passenger screening checkpoint. US Representative Abigail Spanberger noted how exciting this development is for the airport:
“For the second year in a row, Richmond International Airport is on track to serve a record number of passengers.
"The airport is integral to the continued growth of our Commonwealth’s economy and Virginians’ ability to get where they’re going through the air. I’m proud to have worked alongside Representatives McClellan and Wittman to bring this funding home.”
Washington Dulles International Airport’s terminal’s innovative design was created by renowned architect Eero Saarinen.

besides the stock online/Getty images, would have been interesting to include current airport diagram with concourses and where new one will be
If you look at a current airport diagram, the new building will be located just opposite of the taxiway on the Southside of concourse C, specifically across from C2-C8. The patch of land sitting there is where the new terminal will be built.
This is actually old news because they broke ground on the foundation for the new terminal in March this year. So far they've built up the steel frame of the east half of the new terminal, but it's still a ways off before we see the area cleared out for the new apron to be done.
Is the 5th runway still coming to IAD?
Its a great thing that this airport has better service into Washington DC with I think its an L.R.T. style service, taking a taxi is VERY EXPENSIVE & its a great thing that this airport is getting an upgrade taking into considering the number of airlines that fly into this airport so getting this upgrade would be an excellent idea!!
Not surprised at the timing. Senator Kaine is up for re-election on November 5th in a state that is politically to the left of California. And, Ms. Spanberger is planning on running for Governor of Virginia next year. It's called "bringing home the pork"!
At IAD, a replacement of the aging and obsolete Concourse C/D is sorely needed so I would not consider this pork-barrel spending because this is an international airport that serves the public and needs a makeover starting with finally doing away with the old 1983-era concourse and building a new replacement.
