Speed Week: Summer racing campaign warming up as June arrives

The summer racing season is heating up with recent events at area tracks, including at Fairbury Speedway and at Farmer City.

There will be a special show Friday night at Grundy County as a facsimile of the big time will appear.

Here's a look at what is happening and who is performing well at some of the regions speed plants.

Friday Racing

Farmer City Raceway

Racing at the Fairbury sister track will take a break this Friday but will be back in action on June 9.

The following are the top five drivers in each division through the end of May.

Late Model

1. Logan Moody, 166; 2. Roben Huffman, 157; 3. Colton Billington, 148; 4. Jason Feger, 135; 5. Kevin Weaver, 129.

Stock Car

Grundy County Speedway

The Midwest Super Cups, a scaled down version of a NASCAR Cup car, will be featured in a special racing event at the ⅓-mile, paved oval. Late model, sportsman, pure stock and hobby stock divisions will also be racing on. Grandstands open at 5 p.m., qualifying will start at 6:45 and the first race is at 8. The track is located at the fairgrounds in Morris.

Pure Stock

Kankakee County Speedway

It will be "Kids Night" at the fairgrounds quarter-mile dirt oval. Plans call for a huge bicycle giveaway.

Action on the track will consist of a $2,000 pro late model race, plus action in the modified, pro mods, stock cars, factory stocks, sport compacts and stock 4-cylinders. Stands open at 5:30 p.m., hot lap/qualifying is at 6:15 and racing will follow.

Lincoln Speedway

Track officials have this weekend off but will be working next weekend as racing will return on June 9 to the Logan County Fairground dirt track.

Saturday Racing

Fairbury Speedway

The Illinois State Rifle Association and Addis Auto Parts will be the presenting sponsors for the first weekly program of the season. Late model, modified, stock car, sportsman and hobby-modified drivers will compete on the quarter-mile, high-banked dirt track.

The regular weekly programs provide race fans with some of the best racing that can be seen, and one never knows who might show up.

Children between the ages of 5 and 6 years of age will have the opportunity to register on the front stretch to compete in the Dash for Cash. Spectator gates open at 2 p.m., practice starts at 5:50 with qualifying and racing to follow.

Dave's Supermarket in Fairbury will have its annual "Meet and Greet" Saturday from 1-2:30 p.m. Fans will have the chance to see the cars up close and meet the stars of America's Dirt Track.

Macon Speedway

The 1/5-mile dirt oval will be idle this Saturday, but racing will return on June 10.

Sycamore Speedway

If you have the need for a little "blast from the past" or ever went to the Santa Fe Speedway, take a ride to Maple Park in Kane County. Every Friday during the race season, fans will see Powder Puff, Spectator, Socker Stockers, Compacts and a Demo Derby.

This Saturday, limited late models, street stocks, pure stocks and late models will return on the half-mile track. Gates will open both nights at 6, with practice/time trials at 6:30 and racing at 7:30.

Sunday Racing

Bohmer's Route 66 Speedway

Kart racing action will return on June 11.
